In a move that will likely offer a bit of relief to early-rising students, the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has announced a revised schedule for the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME). The most notable change affects candidates scheduled for the first session of the day.
Under the new directive, the arrival window has been pushed back to allow candidates more time to reach their designated centers. Here is the breakdown of the updated first-session timeline:
• New Arrival Time: 7:00 am (formerly 6:30 am)
• Examination Start Time: 8:30 am
• Other Sessions: Scheduled sittings for the afternoon and evening remains largely unaffected.
The adjustment is perceived as a direct response to the logistical hurdles and public outcry seen during the 2025 examination cycle. Last year, the 6:30 am arrival requirement was met with significant criticism, as parents and candidates argued it was unnecessarily early and posed safety and transportation challenges.
JAMB noted that this shift is aimed at “improving the conduct of the exercise” and ensuring a “smoother experience” for all participants.
By moving the start and arrival times, the board hopes to reduce the stress associated with the morning rush.
Confirming the update on its X account, the board issued a notice to all registered candidates:
”Attention 2026 UTME Candidates: This is to notify you of a slight adjustment to the arrival scheduled time, particularly for the first session, which is now 7:00 am as against the earlier published 6:30 am, while the scheduled start time for the session is now 8:30 am.”
Candidates are advised to log into their profiles to confirm their specific session details and ensure they adhere to the new 7:00 am check-in to avoid disqualification.
