Alastair Long has officially taken office as His Majesty’s Trade Commissioner (HMTC) for Africa, leading the UK Government’s efforts to strengthen trade and investment across the continent.
His role, based within the Department for Business and Trade, focuses on creating jobs, boosting business opportunities, and supporting sustainable economic growth in both the UK and Africa. Mr. Long will collaborate closely with governments, investors, and local businesses to expand commercial partnerships, improve market access, and drive mutual innovation.

This appointment marks a return to the region for Mr. Long, who previously served as Deputy and Acting Trade Commissioner for Africa between 2019 and 2022.
A veteran diplomat who joined the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office in 2002, he most recently served as His Majesty’s Ambassador to the Kingdom of Bahrain. His extensive career also includes senior trade and diplomatic roles in Saudi Arabia, Dubai, and Oman.
Commenting on his new role, Alastair Long said:

Mr. Long succeeds John Humphrey, who served in the post from June 2022.

As Trade Commissioner, Mr. Long oversees all UK trade promotion, investment strategy, and trade policy initiatives across Africa, working alongside British embassies and diplomatic networks to support businesses of all sizes.
