LAGOS, NIGERIA — The Arts and Culture Writers Association of Nigeria (ACWAN) has ushered in a new leadership era following its elections held on Wednesday, January 7, 2026.
A four-member Executive Committee of distinguished media professionals was elected to lead the association, with veteran journalist Mr. Tony Okuyeme of New Telegraph emerging as Chairman.
The new leadership team, characterized by a blend of seasoned expertise and diverse creative backgrounds, includes:
Vice Chairman: Tomi Falade (Independent Newspapers), Secretary-General: Anote Ajeluorou (TheArtHubNg) and Assistant Secretary-General: Ngozi Uma (Daily Independent)
In an inspiring acceptance speech, Mr. Okuyeme called for a strategic shift in the association’s role, urging members to move from “operating in the shadows” to becoming active shapers of national and international cultural discourse.
“Arts and culture writers don’t just document society; we help society understand itself,” Okuyeme stated. “That’s a sacred responsibility. This administration is committed to establishing partnerships with major cultural institutions and digital platforms to ensure our members’ work reaches the audiences it deserves.”
The Chairman outlined a four-point agenda focused on: Professional Development: Reclaiming the association’s voice through masterclasses with international critics, Regional Expansion: Establishing chapters across Nigeria to bridge generational gaps, Institutional Synergy: Launching an Annual Cultural Summit to unite writers, artists, and gallery owners, and Modernization: Implementing digital membership platforms and transparent governance through virtual town halls.
Profile of the New Leadership
The incoming executive team brings a wealth of experience to the table:
• Tomi Falade (Vice Chairman): An award-winning journalist and versatile critic of film, fashion, and music. She is the author of OLOBUN: Matriarch of Ondo, Mother of Legacy and Dates From Hell.
• Anote Ajeluorou (Secretary-General): Former Arts Editor and Head of Politics at The Guardian. An accomplished author (Igho Goes to Farm), he is the founder of TheArtHubNg and Managing Editor of the anthology, Moonbeam.
• Ngozi Uma (Assistant Secretary-General): A columnist and reporter recently honored with the 2025 Diamond Excellence Award as Top Female Media Performer of the Year. She is also a noted children’s author (The Pounding Widow) and digital content creator.
Okuyeme concluded by acknowledging the task ahead: “The road ahead won’t be easy, but together, we will surmount the challenges and reposition this association for greatness.”
